Demanding Strict Constitutional Abidance Until It’s Inconvenient

Justice01Within minutes of the news breaking that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia had died, Republicans said (more specifically Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said) they would refuse to consider ANY Obama nominee to replace him, no matter what. Such a lengthy vacancy on the court would likely preserve the status quo in a number of high-profile cases this term, including those affecting the issues of affirmative action, immigration, abortion access and possibly even the president’s climate regulations. It would also leave in legal limbo countless other cases Scalia and his clerks have worked on this term.

Several critical cases are already pending before the Supreme Court, including:

  • The latest attack on abortion rights in Texas
  • President Obama’s Clean Power Plan to fight climate change
  • The president’s action to allow the “Dreamer” undocumented immigrants to stay in our country
  • The right-wing attack on the right of teachers and other workers to form strong unions
  • An extremist proposal to roll back voting rights by ending the “one person, one vote” rule
  • A Texas case that would limit affirmative action in higher education

It’s time to say resoundingly, “ENOUGH!” Republican obstruction has its limits. We, as Democrats, need to commit to doing everything it takes to retake the U.S. Senate this fall. If the Senate leaves town on recess (which they shouldn’t, the President should hold them in session), President Obama could make an appointment during that recess. And, if the GOP-controlled Senate does successfully manage to block all consideration of President Obama’s nominee, we need to make sure that we elect those who, once seated and sworn in the first week of January, will confirm President Obama’s nominee before our next President is inaugurated.

Along with other matters, such as overturning Citizens United, these cases remind us just how important it is that the next Supreme Court justice share America’s progressive values and rules the right way on these issues. We have an historic opportunity to have a progressive majority on the Supreme Court for the first time in more than 25 years.

Catherine Cortez Masto is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Harry Reid. To assure that our concerns and issues are effectively considered and dealt with by the U.S. Senate, you need to make sure you get out this fall, either during early voting, or on election day, and cast your vote for Catherine. The last person we need claiming to represent Nevada’s interests is a Senator Joe Heck. It’s time to send him packing. We’ve seen what he did in the House and we don’t need even more of that in the Senate.

Getting Ready for Caucus

— Vickie Rock, HumboldtDems Chair

Caucus day is coming up soon:  Saturday, February 20, 2016 with doors opening at 10:00 AM and counts beginning at 11:00 AM. If you’ve never participated in a “caucus” before, you can learn more about the process HERE.

To facilitate holding caucuses across the county, I’ve been making phone calls attempting to find folks who would be willing to help us conduct their precinct’s Caucus as well as folks to check folks in and register those chose to do same-day registration.  Though I’ve made it through most of the list of Democrats for whom I phone numbers, there a quite a few folks around the county for whom I have no phone number.  I’m still calling precinct Democrats, but if you’re in Precincts 1 -6 and you haven’t gotten a call from me, I don’t have  your number and thus, couldn’t make that “ask.”  So, if you’d be willing to help out in your precinct, please call me instead at (775) 623-1029.

Here’s when training for those who will be helping to conduct the various precinct Caucus sessions will take place:

When:  Saturday, February 6, 2016 from Noon to 3 PM

Where:  RoundTable Pizza, 1043 W 4th St, Winnemucca, NV

For those who have agreed to help, please hold that date and time on your calendars.

Pre-Registering for Caucus —

Caucus Express is a new tool that allows caucus goers to save time and speed up the process of signing in on Caucus Day by pre-registering now online.  It’s a 3-step process that first asks for your email, your last name, date of birth and zip code, asks you to verify that the person they found in the DMV is you, and then lets you “pre-register.”  The application will then email your confirmation with your caucus location.

How the Caucus Express Works for you —

Users will receive their caucus location and updates about the caucus via email and can also enroll to receive text message alerts. When voters who have pre-registered arrive on Caucus Day, they will see a special phone number posted near the entrance line. When they text their unique code to that number from their mobile device, they can proceed to the express check-in lane.

What To Do If Your Information Doesn’t Match —

If the Caucus Express system cannot find any Democratic voter registrations that match your information, it may be because of a recent change in name or address. You also must be registered to vote as a Democrat in order to participate in the caucuses. Nevada Democrats allow same-day voter registration on Caucus Day, or you can register to vote or update your information now on the Nevada Secretary of State’s website.

Who Can Attend a Precinct Caucus?

  • Precinct caucuses are open meetings. Anyone can attend and observe, but only registered Democrats (including 17 year olds who will be 18 by November 8, 2016 and register as Democrats) can participate.
  • Young people who will NOT be 18 by November 8, 2016 are encouraged to attend as Youth Attenders. They can not participate in the caucus. They are there strictly to observe.

Who Can Participate?

  • All participants must be Democrats registered to vote in their precinct. A list of registered Democrats will be available at the caucuses. If you are not on the list and are not registered to vote, you will be able to register as a Democrat at the caucus.
  • If you’re currently registered as a Democrat in Humboldt County, but want to participate in the caucus, you can save yourself some time plus the hassle of same-day registration, by registering online at the NV Secretary of State’s website well before caucus day.
  • Seventeen-year-olds, who will be 18 by the general election on November 8, 2016, will be allowed to fully participate. If they have not done so before caucus day, they will be required to fill out a voter registration card and register as a Democrat.
  • Participants will be allowed to register to vote at their precinct caucus location. Republicans, nonpartisans and others will be able to change their registration to become a Democrat that day to enable their partication.
    • NOTE: Should a Republican change his/her registration to Democrat, s/he will NOT be able to participate in the Republican Caucus on Tuesday, February 23, 2016.  The Delegate selection plan subsection states: No person shall be allowed to participate in the Presidential Preference Poll at the Precinct Meeting who does not already appear as a registered Republican on the voter rolls for that precinct not less than ten (10) days prior to the day of the meeting. Same day registration is prohibited.

Does it cost anything to participate?
No.

Is there a way to vote early or cast an absentee vote?

Obama Takes a Walk on the Greener Side

As Nevada short-circuits its solar boom, the White House gets more committed to renewable energy.

— by

Emily Schwartz GrecoUntil now, President Barack Obama has embraced gas and oil fracking, encouraged the construction of new nuclear reactors, and hailed government investment in wind and solar power. In keeping with this “all-of-the-above” energy strategy, he’d call for climate action one minute and sign off on measures destined to boost carbon pollution the next.

Suddenly, it looks like Obama may have ditched his inherently contradictory approach.

“We’ve got to accelerate the transition away from dirty energy,” he asserted during his final State of the Union address. “I’m going to push to change the way we manage our oil and coal resources, so that they better reflect the costs they impose on taxpayers and our planet.”

Just three days later, the Obama administration moved in that direction by declaring a three-year moratorium on new leases to mine coal from federal land.

Obama’s speech also cast switching to renewable energy and phasing out fossil fuels in a business-friendly light.

“We’re taking steps to give homeowners the freedom to generate and store their own energy —  something environmentalists and tea partiers have teamed up to support,” he said. There’s plenty going on at a larger scale too. Wind and solar energy are generating more than half of the new power that came online last year.

The Republican Party’s obsession with “job creators” should make it a fan of green energy. Nearly 210,000 Americans now work for the solar industry, and some 73,000 are employed in the wind business. Renewable power forged at least 79,000 new jobs between 2008 and 2012 as 50,000 coal jobs vanished.

But the fossil fuel industries and their political allies won’t surrender without a fight. As Obama put it: “There are plenty of entrenched interests who want to protect the status quo.”

To see what he meant, check out what’s up in Nevada.

Right before Christmas, the state’s electric-sector regulators short-circuited policies that rewarded homeowners for investing in their own solar panels. Nevadans may end up paying for the privilege of generating their own electricity while simultaneously padding the profit margins of NV Energy, rather than getting compensated for it.

The Nevada Public Utility Commission, whose three members were all appointed by Republican governor Brian Sandoval, effectively killed demand for rooftop solar power and the jobs that diversifying industry would have created in Nevada—overnight. The new policies also punish consumers who previously bought or leased panels.

This about face prompted companies like SolarCity, Vivint, and Sunrun to shutter their operations in the state. SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive is calling this move an act of “sabotage,” and two Las Vegas residents have already filed a class action lawsuit.

Along with rigging the rules, fossil fuel lobbyists are trying to extract new political favors. The coal industry, for example, wants new government handouts from West Virginia’s cash-strapped government. And, there are rumblings about a federal bailout for Big Oil.

This money ought to support and ramp up the green transition, not delay it. That’s what Obama meant when he asserted: “Rather than subsidize the past, we should invest in the future.”

And although polls have shown that government efforts to expand solar and wind power enjoy bipartisan support, GOP presidential contenders and many Republican leaders dismiss these increasingly competitive industries.

“Why would we want to pass up the chance for American businesses to produce and sell the energy of the future?” asked Obama, raising an excellent question. “The jobs we’ll create, the money we’ll save, and the planet we’ll preserve  —  that’s the kind of future our kids and grandkids deserve.”

Indeed. Supposedly pro-business politicians who are out to kill the green energy boom make no sense. Neither does an all-of-the-above energy strategy.
